Identity and Responsibility

The question of who we are is a basic question in human life. We can ask this question with regard to mankind as such and answer it from a philosophical, scientific or religious point of view. However, it goes without saying that the question of identity not only refers to mankind. For identity is something that refers to us as individuals or as members of a group of individuals. Who or what am I? And who and what are we who conceive of ourselves as members of a group? Beyond these big questions of life, however, we should not forget to reflect on the link between identity and responsibility. In which sense do we need to have an identity to be responsible actors? And isn’t it true in reverse, that we are responsible for our identity?
